CHALLENGES & SUCCESSES
Challenges
Park and recreation projects often present unique challenges due to their location within active
community settings and the need to serve diverse users. Our extensive park experience has shown our
team that the most common challenges often include:
Construction in Active Communities — Maintaining public safety and minimizing disruption for
nearby residents, visitors, and businesses.
Aging Infrastructure — Replacing or modernizing outdated utilities, drainage systems, and facilities.
Community Expectations — Balancing diverse stakeholder input with budget and schedule realities.
Environmental Factors — Managing stormwater, preserving green space, and addressing unique site
conditions.
Funding Constraints — Delivering creative, cost-effective solutions within fixed municipal budgets or
grant -funded allocations.
Successes
The Skillman Corporation has successfully delivered numerous park and recreation projects by
anticipating these challenges and proactively managing them. Recent examples include:
Lowell High School Athletic Complex — The project successfully transformed the athletic facilities
at Lowell High School into a modern, competitive space that aligns with peer conference standards.
Its thoughtful, community -oriented design fosters accessibility, safety, and pride while enhancing the
user experience for athletes, spectators, and residents alike. Delivered on target as part of the Tri-Creek
School Corporation's capital improvement initiative, this project highlights our proven capacity for
executing high -impact renovations that balance community aspirations with pragmatic execution.
City of West Lafayette — The City of West Lafayette Wellness Center exemplifies how inclusive design,
community engagement, and thoughtful architecture can coalesce into a transformative public facility.
Opened in 2021 following extensive outreach to diverse community groups, the Center offers accessible
amenities — from hybrid pools and fitness studios to childcare and gathering spaces — framed within a
sustainable, nature -integrated design. Recognized with regional AIA awards, the facility quickly became
a beloved, highly utilized community asset.
Through collaboration, transparent communication, and a focus on safety and quality, Skillman
consistently delivers projects that enhance recreational opportunities, reflect community vision, and
provide lasting value for generations.
........................................................................................................................................................................................
PROJECT REFERENCES
City of West Lafayette
Erin Easter, Mayor
222 N.
