The number of hives would be limited by size and the monetary
penalty amount for violations is the same.
As you know, the only food desert in St. Joseph County is only in our City. Also
with industrialization, a major concern focuses on colony collapse and other
diseases. Local honey bees are always better for any food source needing
pollination. There is a local grass roots group, along with Unity Gardens who are
willing to help with educational outreach and training. They are also working to
raise money so that they can donate two (2) bee keeper suits to the Department of
Code Enforcement.
Because honey bee keeping may be new to some of you, I am attaching the "List
of Assistance for Bee Keeping in Indiana" which the Indiana Department of
National Resources (DNR) posts on their website, which is referenced in footnote
# 4, as well as a drawing of a flyway barrier.
I look forward to discussing this with you when it is referred to the Council's
Health and Public Safety Committee for review and recommendation, with 2nd &
3`d readings and public hearing proposed for May 29th . Thank you.
Tim Scott
1St District Council Member
Filed ire C.
:r #ie
MAY 8 - Z013
CITY CLERK, SEND, IN
