REGULAR MEETING <br />AUGUST 28, 1989 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the <br />Council Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, August 28, 1989, at 7:00 <br />p.m. The meeting was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag was given. <br />ROLL CALL Present: Council Members Luecke, Niezgodski, <br />Soderberg, Puzzello, Slavinskas, <br />Zakrzewski, Coleman, Duda and Voorde <br />Absent: None <br />REPORT FROM THE SUB- COMMITTEE ON MINUTES <br />To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: <br />The sub - committee has inspected the minutes of the July 14, 1989, August 14, 1989 <br />and August 21, 1989 meetings of the Council and found them correct. <br />Therefore, we recommend the same be approved. <br />/s/ John Voorde <br />/s/ Loretta Duda <br />Council Member Coleman made a motion that the minutes of the July 14, 1989, August <br />14, 1989 and August 21, 1989, meetings of the Council be accepted and placed on <br />file, seconded by Council Member Zakrzewski. The motion carried. <br />SPECIAL BUSINESS <br />RESOLUTION NO. 1741 -89 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING THE SOUTH BEND POLICE <br />DEPARTMENT FOR ITS ON -GOING CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL <br />DRUGS IN OUR COMMUNITY. <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council acknowledges that the availability and use of illegal <br />drugs is a devastating problem throughout our country; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of South Bend through the Police Department has instituted <br />several educational programs in our school systems to inform our students about <br />such illegal drugs; and <br />WHEREAS, the South Bend Police Department has vigorously fought against drug <br />dealers, and has risked its own safety in attempting to curtail crime in this area, <br />and <br />WHEREAS, since 1986, the South Bend Police Department has confiscated $132,336 from <br />drug dealers; and <br />WHEREAS, the City further acknowledges the positive impact of the four- year -old <br />"Equitable Sharing Program" administered by the U. S. Marshals Service, and state <br />and local police, who help federal agents in drug seizures. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, as follows: <br />SECTION I. On behalf of all of the citizens of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council hereby publicly commends the South Bend Police Department for all of its <br />efforts in fighting illegal drugs in our community. <br />SECTION II. The Council acknowledges that since 1986, the South Bend Police <br />Department has confiscated more money and property from drug dealers than any other <br />police agency, except the Indiana State Police. <br />SECTION III. The Common Council gives its wholehearted support to the continuing <br />efforts of the South Bend Police Department in the tremendously dangerous task of <br />eradicating illegal drugs from our community. <br />SECTION IV.
