ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING <br />JANUARY 2, 1989 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the <br />Council Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, January 2, at noon. The <br />meeting was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag was given. <br />ROLL CALL Present: Council Members Luecke, Niezgodski, <br />Soderberg, Puzzello, Slavinskas, Zakrzewski, <br />Coleman, Duda, Voorde <br />Absent: None <br />Council Member Niezgodski made a motion to nominate Council Member Puzzello as <br />President, seconded by Council Member Coleman. Council Member Luecke made a motion <br />to close nominations, seconded by Council Member Niezgodski. Council Member <br />Puzzello was elected by acclamation. <br />Council Member Coleman made a motion to nominate Council Member Niezgodski as Vice <br />President, seconded by Council Member Puzzello. Council Member Soderberg made a <br />motion to nominate Council Member Slavinskas as Vice President, seconded by Council <br />Member Slavinskas. Council Member Coleman made a motion to close the nominations, <br />seconded by Council Member Luecke. Council Member Niezgodski was elected. <br />Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion to nominate Council Member Luecke as <br />Chairman of the Committee of the Whole, seconded by Council Member Duda. Council <br />Member Slavinskas made a motion to nominate Council Member Soderberg as Chairman of <br />the Committee of the whole, seconded by Council Member Soderberg. Council Member <br />Puzzello made a motion to close the nominations, seconded by Council Member <br />Zakrzewski. The motion carried. Council Member Luecke was elected. <br />Council Member Soderberg made a motion to retain the services of Council attorney, <br />Kathleen Cekanski - Farrand for the year 1989, seconded by Council Member Coleman. <br />The motion carried. <br />Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion to reappoint Roman Piasecki and Sandy Combs <br />as redevelopment commissioners, seconded by Council Member Coleman. The motion <br />carried. <br />Council Member Voorde made a motion to appoint Edward Baer to the Human Rights <br />Commission, seconded by Council Member Luecke. The motion carried. <br />RESOLUTION NO. 1684 -89 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING JOHN VOORDE FOR HIS <br />DEDICATED AND CONSCIENTIOUS SERVICE AS COUNCIL <br />PRESIDENT DURING THE 1988 CALENDAR YEAR <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that <br />JOHN VOORDE was duly elected President of the Council at the first official meeting <br />in annual of 1988; and <br />WHEREAS, the Council notes that over the past twelve (12 months, JOHN VOORDE <br />has provided the leadership which set a tone for a positive working relationship <br />between the new Common Council and the new City administration; and <br />WHEREAS, the Council recognizes with pride that among the many contributions <br />made to our community in 1988, one of the most challending was the successful <br />completion of the firefighters negotiations culminating in a two -year agreement <br />under Council President Voorde's leadership; and <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council applauds Council Member JOHN VOORDE for a job "well <br />done" and thanks him for a year of dedicated, diligent, and conscientious service <br />as Council President, and for being a caring public servant. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />SECTION I. On behalf of all of the citizens of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council publicly commends and thanks Council Member JOHN VOORDE for a job well done <br />as President of the Council in 1988. <br />SECTION II. The Common Council publicly acknowledges Council Member JOHN <br />VOORDE (a /k /a "Mr. Negotiator /Realtor ") for his fine leadership abilities which <br />helped foster a positive atmosphere for the betterment of our entire community. <br />SECTION III.
