Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the <br />Council Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, August 13, 1990, at 7:00 <br />p.m. The meeting was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag was given. <br />ROLL CALL Present: Council Members Luecke, Niezgodski, <br />Soderberg, Puzzello, Slavinskas, <br />Zakrzewski, Coleman, Duda and Voorde <br />Absent: None <br />REPORT FROM THE SUB- COMMITTEE ON MINUTES <br />To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: <br />The sub - committee has inspected the minutes of the July 23, 1990 and July 30, 1990 <br />meeting of the Council and found them correct. <br />Therefore, we recommend the same be approved. <br />/s/ Thomas Zakrzewski <br />/s/ Ann Puzzello <br />Council Member Coleman made a motion that the minutes of the July 23, 1990 and July <br />30, 1990, meeting of the Council be accepted and placed on file, seconded by <br />Council Member Voorde. The motion carried. <br />SPECIAL BUSINESS <br />RESOLUTION NO. 1800 -90 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SOUTH BEND, INDIANA COMMENDING CHARLES E. MARTIN, <br />SR., FOR HIS COMMITMENT AND SERVICE TO THE YOUTH OF <br />OUR COMMUNITY. <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana acknowledges with <br />pride that Charles E. Martin, Sr., has greatly benefitted South Bend and its youth, <br />as Executive Director of the YMCA Urban Youth Services Program and through his many <br />community activities; and <br />WHEREAS, Charles Martin has been a model of leadership, helping others to excel <br />through his own personal sacrifice of long hours, sustained by his unshakeable <br />belief in human goodness; and <br />WHEREAS, Charles Martin has been ahead of the times in working with "at risk" <br />children, overseeing the report cards of thousands of students who have committed <br />themselves to excellence; and <br />WHEREAS, Charles Martin holds himself to those same standards of excellence, and <br />has set (and met) seemingly impossible goals for himself since he was a youth, when <br />he achieved the "Heisman Trophy of Cotton: by picking one hundred pounds in one <br />day; and <br />WHEREAS, Charles Martin inspires our youths to believe in themselves, and to <br />achieve thier goals through hard work and staying out of trouble; and <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council recognizes that Charles Martin has been called the <br />"godfather of youth in the community ", and that a special tribute dinner will be <br />held in his honor on August 19, 1990 at Century Center. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />SECTION I. On behalf of all the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the <br />Common Council hereby publicly commends and thanks Charles E. Martin, Sr., for his <br />leadership, dedication and commitment to the youth of of community. <br />SECTION II. The Common Council wishes Charles Martin health and continued success <br />in his work with students, parents, teachers and community groups. <br />SECTION III. The Common Council encourages all the citizens of South Bend to adopt <br />Charles Martin's motto by "touching a life every day." <br />SECTION IV.
