Consultation and Estimates for Tree Service
Source of Image: Caleb Franklin
Two tree -service companies were consulted on the feasibility of
trimming the canopy of the mature red oak tree to eliminate
overhanging branches on the dwelling unit, a requirement for
continued coverage by Erie Insurance. See excerpts from the
Millennium Inspection Report received October 7' and the letter
from Erie Insurance received November 4th.
Walt Temple, Tree Service
Consultation 10-09-24
Walt advised against additional trimming, noting distance to the start of canopy and the angle of
the trunk toward dwelling unit were causes for concern, depending upon the stability of the root
system. He presented 2 options:
1) Remove the lowest limb facing house, at estimated cost of$420. Additional trimming would
require the homeowner to sign a waiver, releasing Temple from responsibility if the tree fell
because it was off balance.
2) Remove the tree including root ball, grinding stump, and removal of board and waste at
estimated cost of $4,140 payable to Temple.
Caleb Franklin, Above & Beyond Services, Inc.
Consultation 10-18-24
In response to my requestfor a certified arborist, Todd Zeiger recommended Above & Beyond
Services. The firm recently received a Quality Business Award for satisfaction, service, reputation,
and quality for best tree service in South Bend. Caleb identified the tree as Northern Red Oak, a
common species not listed as protected in Indiana. He estimated the distance from ground to start
of canopy exceeded 40 feet and top of canopy was well above 60 feet. He could give no guarantee
that either trimming branches overhanging the roof or trimming all branches to balance the canopy
would not affect overall stability. He estimated structural failure would result in damage to roof
costing $10,000-20,000. He presented one option: Remove the tree to within 6" of ground, root
system permitting and grind stump. Total cost of project was estimated at $8,400.
