White
Chairperson, Committee Dear Council Members;
of the Whole
Tim Scott I am pleased to introduce for your review and approval, regulations which would
First District allow honey bee keeping in the City of South Bend.
Henry Davis, Jr. The proposed ordinance is similar to the Urban Chicken Ordinance recently
Second District passed by the Council, by incorporating reasonable health and public safety
regulations. The number of hives would be limited by size and the monetary
Valerie Schey penalty amount for violations is the same.
Third District
Fred Ferlic As you know, the only food desert in St. Joseph County is only in our City. Also
Fourth District with industrialization, a major concern focuses on colony collapse and other
diseases. Local honey bees are always better for any food source needing
David Varner pollination. There is a local grass roots group, along with Unity Gardens who are
Fifth District willing to help with educational outreach and training. They are also working to
raise money so that they can donate two (2) bee keeper suits to the Department of
Oliver J. Davis Code Enforcement.
Sixth District
Because honey bee keeping may be new to some of you, I am attaching the "List
Derek D. Dieter of Assistance for Bee Keeping in Indiana" which the Indiana Department of
At Large National Resources (DNR) posts on their website, which is referenced in footnote
Gavin Ferlic # 4, as well as a drawing of a flyway barrier.
At Large
I look forward to discussing this with you when it is referred to the Council's
Karen L. White Health and Public Safety Committee for review and recommendation, with 2nd &
At Large 3`d readings and public hearing proposed for May 29th. Thank you.
Tim Scott
lst District Council Member
Filed In C;; - -P* Office
LMAY8-ZO13
CITYCLEfTK, ZR ;"U h SEND, IN
