X013 <br /> it ■ <br /> 1865 <br /> CITY OF SOUTH BEND <br /> PETE BUTTIGIEG,MAYOR <br /> Office of the Mayor <br /> CONTACT: <br /> Kara Kelly, (574) 235-5853 <br /> kkelly@southbendin.gov <br /> FOR RELEASE: Tuesday, May 7, 2013 <br /> MAYOR, POLICE CHIEF TO LEAD `WALKING SCHOOL BUSES' <br /> In honor of National Walk/Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 8, two South Bend primary <br /> centers will host"walking school buses" with the help of the St. Joseph County Health <br /> Department, Police Chief Ron Teachman, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg. <br /> A walking school bus is a group of children, accompanied by adults—parents, school personnel, <br /> community leaders—who walk together on a planned route from a designated meeting place. <br /> The South Bend schools participating in Wednesday's event are: <br /> Marquette Primary Center, 1818 Bergan Street <br /> Led by Police Chief Ron Teachman, the Marquette group will depart the Family Video parking <br /> lot, 1615 Portage Avenue, at 7:35 a.m. and walk north on Portage Avenue, turning left on West <br /> Hamilton Street and right on College Street. <br /> McKinley Primary Center, 228 North Greenlawn Avenue <br /> Led by Mayor Pete Buttigieg, the McKinley group will depart the Potawatomi Zoo parking lot, <br /> 500 South Greenlawn Avenue, at 7:50 a.m. and walk north on Greenlawn. <br /> "Chief Teachman and I want to emphasize the importance of daily exercise and encourage safe <br /> physical activity for South Bend's children," Mayor Buttigieg says.
