• Education <br />Public Schools: The City of South Bend is served by the South Bend Community School <br />Corporation which has a current enrollment of approximately 21,352. The <br />School Corporation includes five high schools, five middle schools and 25 <br />elementary schools. <br />Colleges and Universities: Institutions of higher education in the City include the University <br />of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Indiana University at South Bend, Purdue <br />Program, Bethel College, Holy Cross College, Michiana College and Davenport <br />College. <br />Transportation <br />Railroads: Six rail lines provide freight and passenger service to the City and the South Shore <br />line runs from South Bend to Chicago. <br />Highways: I-80/90 (Indiana Toll Road); U.S. Highway 20,31 and 33; State Highways 2, 23 <br />and 331. <br />Trucking: Nearly 50 major interstate carriers travel through South Bend regularly. <br />Air: The Michiana Regional Airport serves the City with nine carriers. Chicago <br />O'Hare Airport is approximately 100 miles from the City. <br />Bus: A municipal bus service (Transpo) is provided within the City. <br />• Utilities <br />Electricity: Indiana Michigan Po~~er Company.. <br />Gas: Northern Indiana Public Service Company. <br />Water/Sewage: The City of South Bend Municipal Water and Sewer Utilities serve the City. <br />Telephone: Indiana Bell, an Ameritech Company. <br />Community Data <br />Police Protection: South Bend Police Department. <br />Hospitals: There are four acute care hospitals in the South Bend area. Memorial Hospital of <br />South Bend has 526 beds; St. Joseph Medical Center has 339 beds; Michiana <br />Community Hospital has 107 beds; Saint Joseph Hospital of Mishawaka has 177 <br />beds. <br />Recreation: The City of South Bend offers many recreational facilities. The City has 35 <br />playgrounds, 71 public parks providing swimming pools, softball and baseball <br />.diamonds, tennis courts and one 9-hole and two 18-hole golf courses. <br />Cultural: The City of South Bend is the home of a minor league baseball team affiliated with <br />the Chicago White Sox. The St. Joseph River runs through the City providing <br />boating activities. The East Race Water~Nay is a 2,000 yard man-made rafting <br />and kayaking course which flows adjacent to the St. Joseph River. Other <br />attractions include the South Bend Symphony, Morris Civic Auditorium, <br />Potawatomi Zoo, Studebaker Museum and a 225,000 square foot convention and <br />exhibit center, the Century Center. Other activities are also available at the <br />major colleges and universities in the area. <br />
