SOUTH BEND PUBLIC UTILITIES
224 North Main Street
P.O. Box 1714
MICHAEL L. VANCE
Director of Utilities
Members of the Council
Common Council
City of South Bend
Dear Council Members:
CITY ®f SOUTH BEAD
ROGER O. PARENT, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
November 17, 1982
219/284 -9322
There will.be presented for your consideration at first reading
of the November 22, 1982 Council Meeting an ordinance appropriating
additional monies to the operation's budget of the Bureau of Sewers.
This year has proved to be a very productive year. However, the
many cave -ins, the stepping up of the paving program, and the addi-
tional costs associated with the new landfill site have proven costly.
I am requesting an additional $1,704.00 be appropriated to 228.0
Tires and Tubes due to the increase in tire repairs we've experienced
inside the Prairieview landfill site. Additionally I am requesting
$32,375.00 in 363.0 Equipment Repair and $44,500.00 in 357.0 Fuel Oil
for similar reasons. The Equipment Repair monies needed are the
result of an increase in transmission repairs, and the loss of one
diesel engine. Transmission repairs alone account for $24,500.00 of
the funds needed. Morgan Peck the Sanitation Division Manager has
spoken with landfill management, and we've been assured the situation
will improve. As to the $36,935.00 requested in 230.0 Maint. Supplies
and the $11,375.00 requested in 399.0 Other Contractuals, these
amounts are the result of a step up in operations. Clearly Morgan has
tried to do more adjustments to castings this year, and has also been
plagued with a higher than normal amount of cave -ins, including exten-
sive work on Sample Street and Bowman Creek. Additionally a new sec-
tion of the sludge farm (22 acres) is being developed, as a result
equipment we normally would not use had to be rented. The result of
these stepped up operations was the need to buy additional pipe and
castings and lease one loader and one compactor for several months
this summer.
While these activities have caused extensive budget changes, the
results obtained justify those expenses. If I may provide further
information, please feel free to call my office or Morgan Peck.
Sincerely,
J11ox" C)a..-.—
Michael. L. Vance
Director of Utilities
MLV /mtw
