Community Investment
5.16 p.m.
April 8, 2013
Committee Members Present: Gavin Ferlic, Henry Davis, Valerie Schey, Dr. Ferlic
Citizen Members: Patrick Mullen
Other Council Present: Tim Scott, Dr. Varner, Oliver Davis, Karen White, Derek Dieter
Other Present: Greg Lorch, Scott Ford
Agenda: Update Chamber of Commerce — Greg Lorch
Gavin Ferlic, Chairperson of the Community Investment Committee called this meeting to allow Greg
Lorch, Director of Business Growth, for the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce the opportunity to
provide an update on the job growth efforts of the Chamber.
Mr. Lorch provided a thorough summary of the Chamber's efforts to grow business in 2012. His
presentation went on to chart an ongoing approach for 2013. He provided a ream of supporting
material measuring the economic and fiscal impact of activity (a copy is on file in the office of the City
Clerk)
During the question & answer portion that followed the presentation Valerie Schey felt that other local
governmental units should help contribute to these Chamber efforts as does South Bend. Henry Davis
and Derek Dieter agreed, adding that South Bend, in a sense, needs to be selfish. South Bend's
economic development efforts should have a greater South Bend focus. The City's efforts to create jobs
should be directed to job creation in South Bend. This subject will no doubt be raised again during the
summer budget process for 2014.
There being no further business to come before the committee at this time, Chairperson Gavin Ferlic,
adjourned the meeting at 5:17 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Gavin Ferlic, Chairperson
Community & Economic Development Committee
