CITY of SOUTH BEND
ROGER O. PARENT, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT July 6, 1983 219/284 -9311
701 W. Sample Street
South Bend, Indiana 46625
DAN D. THOMPSON
Chief of Police
Members of the Common Council
4th Floor County -City Bldg.
South Bend, IN 46601
Re: Data Communications Link to Police Sectors
Dear Council Members:
The attached bill transfers funds to purchase the necessary equipment
required to provide terminal linkage from the four (4) police sector
substations to the host computer located at 701 [Nest Sample Street.
The equipment will be used to send and receive information over data
lines (telephone lines as we know them). This equipment, known as
Modems and Multiplexers, transmits a signal compatable to the host
computer for processing. The inter -face, when completed, will allow
all officers at the remote sites to make inquires into the system
and also receive a printed copy at their location. The system will
also allow direct access into the State and Federal Computer file
system known as NCIC and IDACS.
The funds involved in this transfer ordinance will also purchase
three (3) additional computer terminals. All original case reports
flow through the central records bureau to become an official police
report. In order to maximize the efficiency of the Department and
render the best and most cost - effective method available, the three
(3) terminals are needed in the day to day operations.
If you have questions about the proposed transfers, please feel free
to contact me.
Very truly yours,
Dan D. Thompson
Chief of Police
DDT /clt
Attachment
