PARENT, Mayor
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
June 6, 1983
Members of the South Bend Common Council
4th Floor County -City Bldg.
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Council Members:
219/284.9241
The attached proposed ordinance establishes the position of Deputy
Mayor, which Mayor Parent intends to fill by appointing the City
Controller to the office. In essence, this designation of the City
Controller as Deputy Mayor merely enables the Mayor to designate him as
acting mayor during the Mayor's absence from the City, or in case of
illness or injury. Such a designation would enable the Mayor to
continue this long standing practice.
Recently passed legislation in the General Assembly makes such a
specific designation of a Deputy Mayor necessary in order to continue
this practice. In addition, in the event of vacancy in the mayoral
office, the Deputy Mayor would fulfill the responsibilities of that
office until the vacancy is filled in accordance with state law.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Sinc ely,
Richard L. Hill
City Attorney
RLH /clt /24
