WAYNE COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY
L.C. SMITH TERMINAL PACKAGE B
Adamo was the Prime Contractor for this project, located
in Romulus, Michigan at the Detroit Metropolitan
Airport. The project was for decommissioning and
demolition of the former L.C. Smith Main Terminal
building, Concourse B, elevated mall, and pedestrian
bridge. The project also included asbestos abatement,
universal waste removal and PCB remediation.
The demolition of the pedestrian bridge, which was over
the main entry/exit road to the airport and attached to a
parking structure was a bit of a challenge. The final
portion required a 300 ton crane to lift the precast beams
from the structure which was between the active
emergency communications tower and the glass
vestibule of the parking deck.
Demolition of the 430,000 sq. ft. terminal included felling of the 125' former control tower which was a mere 80' away
from the active airfield, removal of the basements, sub basements, utility tunnels and foundations.
Adamo imported and placed over 13,000 tons of backfill material and reused over 8,000 tons of onsite material creating a
significant savings. Along with backfill, 16,000 tons of crushed concrete for future project subgrade was imported and
placed.
The project produced over 40,000 tons of
concrete, 35,000 cubic yards of debris, and
5,000 tons of scrap, all sent to recycling
centers.
The project required over 16 subcontractors,
and 12 different consulting firms (testing
agents, design professionals, rental service
companies, layout engineering services, etc.).
Adamo completed the project below budget,
with no lost time injuries and ahead of
schedule, despite delays and complications of
working during the Covid-19 pandemic. The
work was completed July, 2020.
Client Quote:
" 1, amongst many other, commend Adamo Demolition for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments to alleviate the
24 day temporary suspension that was encountered late in the project due to the effects of COVID-19.
Outstanding efforts gentlemen, by yourselves and all others involved in making this project a successful one, actually TWO
successful projects. In conclusion with Package A and e together being on/below budget, beating the schedule and a
quality job was done. Rarely do we see all three of those characteristics together on a project.
Congratulations on a job well done!"
Paul H. Swift, C.M., LIKED GA — Sr. Project Manager I Planning, Design & Construction
