REGULAR MEETING JANUARY 24.2000
of being a friend one could lean on for support at any time of the day or night; for providing
encouragement to a non -flier; for always finding a "straight answer" when asked difficult and
sensitive questions —these are just some of the many examples of this kind and gentle giant who has
left an indelible impact on those he touched.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I. On behalf of all of the residents of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the South
Bend Common Council thanks and commends JAMES R. CALDWELL for his more than seventeen
(17) years of selfless and dedicated public service to our city.
SECTION II. The City of South Bend believes that JAMES R. CALDWELL brought a vital
voice of concern, respect and understanding to the many facets of city government, and because of
his large heart and caring attitude he was able to touch countless lives and truly make our city a
better and special place.
SECTION III. The Common Council wishes JAMES R. CALDWELL continued success
as he embarks on his new career with a Mishawaka carpentry company, and further wishes him and
his wife, Susan and their daughter "Kit" continued happiness and a lifetime of enjoying Busby's
hamburgers with his many, many South Bend friends.
SECTION IV. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption
by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor
— s /James Aranowski, First District s/David A. Varner, Fifth District
s /Charlotte Pfeifer, Second District s /Andrew Ujdak, Sixth District
i s/Roland Kelly, Third District s /Sean Coleman, At Large
s/Karl King, Fourth District s /Al `Buddy" Kirsits, At Large
s/Karen L. White, At Large
ATTEST: s /Loretta J. Duda, City Clerk
s/Kathleen Cekanski - Farrand, Council Attorney
s /Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor
Councilmember Aranowski made the presentation for this Resolution by reading it in its entirety and
presenting it to Mr. Caldwell.
A Public Hearing was held on this Resolution at this time.
Mayor Stephen Luecke spoke in favor of this Resolution by thanking Mr. Caldwell for all his years
of dedicated service.
There was no one present wishing to speak in opposition to this Resolution.
Councilmembers Aranowski, Kelly, Ujdak, Coleman, King, Kirsits and Pfeifer thanked Mr.
Caldwell for all his assistance over the years and his dedication to the position. Councilmember
Coleman noted that due to a scriveners error, the Resolution indicates that Mr. Caldwell began his
service with the City in 1987 when it should have read 1983. Additionally, Councilmember King
noted that Mr. Caldwell has agreed to serve as a citizen member of the Common Council Residential
Neighborhood Committee.
Councilmember Coleman made a motion to adopt this Resolution. Councilmember Uj dak seconded
the motion which carried by acclamation.
