REGULAR MEETING <br />SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in the Council <br />Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, September 10, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting <br />was called to order by Council President Charlotte Pfeifer and the Invocation and Pledge to the Flag <br />were given. <br />ROLL CALL <br />Present: <br />Charlotte Pfeifer <br />2nd District President <br />Roland Kelly <br />3rd District <br />David Varner <br />5th District <br />Sean Coleman <br />At -Large <br />Al `Buddy" Kirsits <br />At -Large <br />Karen L. White <br />At -Large <br />Absent: <br />James Aranowski <br />1" District Vice - President <br />Karl King <br />4t' District <br />Andrew Ujdak <br />6t' District Chairperson, Committee of the Whole <br />REPORT FROM THE SUB- COMMITTEE ON MINUTES <br />To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: The sub - committee has inspected the minutes <br />of the August 27, 2001 meeting of the Council and found them to be correct. <br />Therefore, we recommend the same be approved. <br />s /Charlotte Pfeifer <br />s /David Varner <br />Councilmember Coleman made a motion that the minutes of the August 27, 2001 meeting of the <br />Council be accepted and placed on file. Councilmember Kelly seconded the motion which carried <br />by a voice vote of six (6) ayes. <br />SPECIAL BUSINESS <br />PRESENTATION - UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM <br />Ms. Ann Kolata, Department of Community and Economic Development, informed the <br />Council that this summer she had the privilege of working with a group of students at the <br />University of Notre Dame Upward Bound Program. Thirty-four (34) students participated <br />in a six -(6) week project to look at the Studebaker Corridor and come up with some <br />recommendations as how they think the City should proceed with redevelopment. They have <br />submitted their report to the Council and will make their presentation. Ms. A. Coates, <br />Director, Upward Bound Program, informed the Council that the Upward Bound Program <br />mission is to help first generation low income students obtain a post secondary education. <br />Their goal at the University of Notre Dame is also to help the students nurture a love for <br />learning through opportunities such as this. Mr. Jarvis Donaldson, Ms. Betty Espinoza, Ms. <br />Martha Gutieerez, Mr. Davon Patterson, Ms. Bianca Tirado, and Ms. Jasmyne West <br />presented their report to the Council through a power point presentation. <br />Councilmembers White and Kelly thanked the students for their thoughtful presentation and <br />excellent job in preparing the presentation. <br />
