The late Curtis Walton joined the South Bend Police Department in December of 1973. Just a few years into hi s career, he was honored with the "Outstand ing Poli ceman of the Year" award. Walton was promoted several tim es a t SBPD , retiring as a Lieutenant in 1999. After retirement, he worked for the IU South Bend Police Department, the County-City Building and Kennedy Academy. Cu11is also received the Key to the City from Mayor James Mueller on Augus t 2 1, 2022. Mayor Mueller supports this request and t hanked Mr. Walton for hi s service to South Bend and over IO years of bringing t he commun ity together at his back-yard ga the rings on the intersection of Wa sh ington and Lombardy Streets where he resid ed. [tis the request of the fam il y and community to schedule an honorary sign re-nam ing press co nfere nce (Curtis Wa lton Blvd) in August of this year around hi s birthday (August 11 th , so possib ly, August 3Ll, or August 9 th ). We wi ll work with the Depai1ment of Public Works and the Office of the Mayor on a mutually agreed date.
