REGULAR MEETING FEBRUARY 11, 2002 <br />Mr. Oxian stated that Fire Station #9 which is being recommended for landmark status was <br />constructed in 1926. The interesting feature of this building is that it is a bungalow style fire station <br />and is the first one that will be declared as a landmark which is currently being used. All other fire <br />stations that have been declared landmarks were all abandoned stations. The architect that <br />constructed this building was involved with the Smoger Company and is the same individual that <br />was also involved with the former Nuner School. <br />This being the time heretofore set for the Public Hearing on the above bill, proponents and <br />opponents were given an opportunity to be heard. <br />Mayor Stephen Luecke,1400 County -City Building, South Bend, Indiana, stated that he appreciates <br />the history of this structure and what it has meant for the people in the River Park neighborhood and <br />that the administration supports making this building a local landmark. <br />There was no one else present wishing to speak in favor of this bill and there was no one present <br />wishing to speak in opposition to this bill. <br />Therefore, Councilmember Coleman made a motion for favorable recommendation to full Council <br />concerning this bill. Councilmember Varner seconded the motion which carried by a voice vote of <br />seven (7) ayes. <br />BILL NO. 3 -02 PUBLIC HEARING ON A BILL AMENDING THE <br />ZONING ORDINANCE, AND ESTABLISHING HISTORIC <br />LANDMARKS FOR STRUCTURES AND REAL <br />PROPERTY LOCATED IN THE 1300 BLOCK OF <br />CHESTER STREET, IN THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA <br />Councilmember White reported that the Zoning & Annexation Committee held a Public Hearing on <br />this bill and after extensive discussion, it is being sent to the full Council with an unfavorable <br />recommendation. <br />Mr. John Oxian, President, Historic Preservation Commission, no address given, stated that he <br />would like to withdraw this bill at this time in view of new information he recently received. <br />Therefore, Councilmember Coleman made a motion to strike this bill from the agenda at this time <br />at the request of the petitioner. Councilmember Varner seconded the motion which carried by a <br />voice vote of seven (7) ayes. <br />BILL NO. 4 -02 PUBLIC HEARING ON A BILL AMENDING THE <br />ZONING ORDINANCE, AND ESTABLISHING AN <br />HISTORIC LANDMARK FOR STRUCTURES AND REAL <br />PROPERTY LOCATED AT 745 LELAND, IN THE CITY <br />OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA <br />Councilmember White reported that the Zoning & Annexation Committee met on this bill and sends <br />it to the Council with a favorable recommendation. <br />Mr. John Oxian, President, Historic Preservation Commission, no address given, made the <br />presentation for this bill. <br />Mr. Oxian noted that this house is being recommended for landmark status not only because of its <br />architectural superiority, which is a Queen Ann style house ranked as a #12, but also the historical <br />-2- <br />
