The Army announced the awarding of $23.6 million to AM General for the continuing purchase <br />of HUMMERS. This amount is a portion of the $90 million that the company is scheduled to <br />receive in the first year of a five-year Hummer contract totaling $1 billion. These events have <br />helped stabilize the presence of AM General after the closing of the South Bend plant and the <br />layoffs of the Mishawaka. plant. The net effect on employment at these plants will be a <br />reduction of 800 to 1,000 employees. <br />The convention and tourism industry contributed over $58 million to the St. Joseph County <br />economy in 1989, $52 million in 1988 and $54 million in 1987. 1987's performance was <br />highlighted by the International Special Olympics, according to a report prepared by the <br />Convention and Tourism Division of the South Bend-Mishawaka Chamber of Commerce.
