CITY OF SOUTH BEND <br /> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> March 18, 2013 <br /> Contact: Assistant Fire Chief John Corthier <br /> Phone: 574-250-0015 <br /> SOUTH BEND RESPONDS TO PLANE CRASH NEAR AIRPORT <br /> NTSB Starting Ini,estigation, City Handling Community Response <br /> SOUTH BEND—City of South Bend personnel have been responding to a plane crash that <br /> occurred Sunday, March 17, 2013, on Iowa Street near the South Bend Regional Airport at <br /> approximately 4:25 p.m. <br /> Three homes were damaged when the plane crashed. Due to the instability of the homes and the <br /> serious danger due to jet fuel and wreckage, gas and power has been shut off to the three <br /> structures. <br /> A representative with Indiana-Michigan Power has confirmed to the City of South Bend that <br /> power has been restored to the neighborhood with the exception of the three homes affected. <br /> NIPSCO has confirmed to the City of South Bend that gas service has been restored to the <br /> neighborhood with the exception of the three damaged homes. <br /> In addition to the three homes affected, five additional homes remain under a mandatory <br /> evacuation. Four are across the street on the west side of Iowa Street. One additional home is on <br /> the east side of Iowa Street with the three damaged homes. The homes under mandatory <br /> evacuation include the following addresses: 1609, 1610, 1613, 1614, 1619, 1620, 1623, and <br /> 1624. <br /> Due to the proximity of these homes to the crash site, residents are asked to find alternate <br /> accommodation indefinitely. The Red Cross is available to help residents who might need <br /> housing assistance. If you are one of the residents affected and need housing assistance, please <br /> contact the local Red Cross at 574-234-0191. <br /> Residents who live in the neighborhood, primarily along Iowa Street, who are not part of the <br /> mandatory evacuation have been cleared to return to their homes.
