<br />The St. Joseph River flows through the City and provides scenic and boating pleasure. The Olympic-class _
<br />East Race Waterway runs adjacent to the St. Joseph River and is a 2,000 yard man-made rafting and
<br />kayaking course. This waterway is the only man-made white water rapids in the, United States. In the
<br />summer, national and regional competitions are held on the course. The regional team trials for the 1992
<br />U.S. Olympic team were held in South Bend.
<br />Other attractions include the Morris Civic Auditorium and the South Bend Symphony which offer cultural
<br />entertainment, the Studebaker Museum which houses a collection of carriages, wagons, cars and trucks,
<br />the Potawatomi Zoo and the Morris Conservatory. Century Center, located on the riverfront park, has
<br />225,000 square feet of exhibit and convention space available as well as a recital hall, performance area
<br />and theater. The $14.2 million facility has experienced a steady 20 % increase in sales every five years
<br />since its opening in 1977. The Century Center currently books approximately 280,000 visitors.
<br />On July 13, 1992, the National Football Foundation announced the College Football Hall of Fame would
<br />be relocating to South Bend, Indiana. The $14 million, 50,000 sq. ft. facility will be connected to the
<br />existing Century Center in downtown South Bend. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of
<br />1994 and the Hall of Fame is anticipated to open in the summer of 1995.
<br />Activities are also available at the many colleges and universities in the City, particularly St. Mary's "'
<br />College, University of Notre Dame, Bethel College and Indiana University at South Bend.
<br />The St. Joseph County Library, as well as the Indiana University at South Bend Library, and the -
<br />Mishawaka-Penn Library provide a wide range of library services to residents of the area. The St. Joseph
<br />County Library completed $8 million of renovations and additions to several branches in 1990 and 1991.
