City of South Bend and St. Joseph County Historic Preservation Guidelines 53 <br />Commercial Standards: Signs <br />Install a Directory or Wayfinding Sign <br />• Directory signs for the interiors of buildings should be mounted on an inside wall or vestibule and not on the front façade . <br />• Wayfinding signs for a community should be coordinated with an overall wayfinding program throughout the City . <br />• Interpretive signs and kiosks should be installed in public rights of way and not attached to the building . <br />• Color, graphics, and scale should be compatible with the District and its character . <br />Install a Banner <br />• Banners should be mounted to street posts or other elements in the District rather than attached permanently to the historic building . <br />The following is not recommended and generally not approved by the Commission: <br />• LED, back lit, electronic signage, or strobe lights . <br />• Back lit plastic signs . <br />• Painting over a ghost sign . <br />• Removing a historic sign that is a character defining feature of the building—either carved, painted or applied. <br />• Installing a sign that covers or removes features that give the building its character . <br />• Rooftop, animated and message board signs . <br />• Oversized signs . <br />• Super graphics . <br />• Billboards on buildings . <br />Return to the Table of Contents <br />Administratively Approvable <br />Inside vestibule walls or <br />storefronts. <br />Administratively Approvable <br />Banners and brackets <br />installed on street posts or <br />other public elements.
