City of South Bend and St. Joseph County Historic Preservation Guidelines 60 <br />Commercial Standards: Walls <br />Wood <br />• Repair of deteriorated wood siding and trim should be completed with new wood . Pine is not a recommended wood species . Poplar or cedar is preferred for its longevity . <br />• Substitute materials such as fiber cement or other composite materials may be approved by the Commission and can be considered when the deteriorated wood siding is in a high moisture contact location, or is high off the ground and difficult to maintain . <br />Rebuild a Part or Entire Wall <br />• When a wall needs to be rebuilt in part or in whole, <br />documentation should first be completed such as <br />high-resolution photographs and drawings. <br />• The exterior layer (cladding) of the rebuilt wall should be reconstructed matching the original in form, look, materials, color, and design . <br />• The internal structure may be any form approved by the building department so long as the exterior cladding matches the original . <br />See also Cornices, Storefronts, Doors, and Windows . <br />The following is not recommended and generally not approved by the Commission: <br />• Covering a brick wall that historically is exposed with a new covering like modern stucco or wood . <br />• Sand or other media abrasive blasting . <br />• Painting an unpainted brick wall . <br />• Vinyl siding . <br />Return to the Table of Contents <br />Administratively Approvable <br />Rebuild a wall to match original.
