United States Department of the Interior <br />National Park Service / National Register of Historic Places Registration Form <br />NPS Form 10-900 OMB No. 1024-0018 <br />Edgewater Place Historic District Saint Joseph County, IN <br />Name of Property County and State <br />Section 7 page 26 <br /> <br />The middle portion of the façade features a concrete stoop and steps in its west half. A wood <br />entry door with a window in its top half divided into nine panes is centered at the back of the <br />stoop. It is flanked by half side-lites divided into four panes. The entry is sheltered by a shed roof <br />supported by a large pair of carved wood brackets. The shed roof features sawn rafter tails and a <br />semicircular eyebrow over the entry door. A three-sided bay projects slightly from the second <br />story over the entry roof. It features two pairs of wood casements divided into ten panes. An 8/8 <br />wood window is east of the entry in the first story and a pair of 6/6 wood windows is east of the <br />bay in the second story. <br /> <br />The house was constructed by Whitcomb & Keller and designed by South Bend architect Ernest <br />W. Young in 1926. The first residents were Simon and Esther Alper who moved into the home in <br />1926. Alpers were the owners of Alpers Ladies’ Store at 815 South Michigan Street in South <br />Bend.24 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />24 South Bend HPC Survey Card, 1985, rev. 1988
