r'
tom-mitt loom:
IWO& Mortis s and Vroprti' Variation Qommittrie
The July 9, 2001 meeting of the Public Works and Property Vacation Committee was called to
order by its Chairperson, Council Member David Varner at 4:56 p.m. in the Council Informal
Meeting Room.
Persons in attendance included Council Members: Coleman, Kelly, Ujdak, King, Kirsits, White,
Pfeifer, and Varner; Khadijah Muhammad, Mrs. Ali Al-Shai, Gene Oakley, John Oxian, Karen
Hammond-Nash, Gary Gilot, Charles Leone,Terry Bland of the Tout] U J Iftribunt and
Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand,Council Attorney.
Council Member Varner noted that the meeting was called to continue discussion of Bill No. 4 .01
which is a request to vacate the first north/south alley west of Lawndale Avenue of approximately
120 which was continued from the last committee meeting to permit the petitioner to meet with a
neighborhood organization.
Mrs. Ali Al-Shai noted that she had met with the Lincoln Way West Steering Committee and would
like to move forward on the vacation for her husband's business. She noted that the alley in
question is subject to litter and that problems resulting from people in the alley negatively affect her
husband's used car business. She noted that the ambulance and Fire Departments were to be
contacted for their comments and she had not heard back.
Gary Gilot stated that he is unaware of any further report from the Fire Department, noting that
they did not object to the closing in their initial report. Mr. Gilot objects to the closing since it
would create a"T"alley which would be against currently engineering policies for the City.
John Oxian stated that the alley should be kept open.
Following discussion, Council Member King made a motion, seconded by Council Member
Kirsits that Bill No.44-01 be recommended unfavorably to Council. The motion passed.
There being no further business to come before the Committee, Council Member Varner adjourned
the meeting at 5:02 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Council Member David Varner,Chairperson
Public Works and Property Vacation Committee
KCF:kmf
Attachment
•
