vzb/L.S, 4:L1 I-M <br />ionn moya unituary (zuut) - tjou[n bena, IN - 60LIM tsena I none <br />occurred Thursday night at his home in the Arbor Pointe subdivision north of South X <br />Bend. <br />Family members said Friday that Floyd had been burned on more than 80 percent of his <br />body, and that doctors initially told them it would be a miracle if he lived. <br />Floyd worked as an officer for the South Bend Police Department for 35 years, retiring in <br />2006. <br />At the time of his death, he had been working as a security guard at Washington High <br />School, and had been with the South Bend Community School Corp. for 38 years. <br />He is survived by three children, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, family <br />members said. <br />Floyd was the only person in his home, which is just south of the Indiana -Michigan state <br />line and west of Portage Road, when it exploded shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday. <br />The explosion hurled debris for more than 100 yards, heavily damaged eight nearby <br />homes, and was heard as far away as Cassopolis and Edwardsburg.
