Tawrin Baker and Juanita Pinzon Caicedo
851 Park Ave.
South Bend, IN 46616
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
OF SOUTH BEND AND ST. JOSEPH COUNTY
County–City Building,
South Bend, IN 46601
To the Historic Preservation Commission,
We would like to add gutters to our home and garage at 851 Park Ave. We bought the house
about a year and a half ago. The house was apparently built without gutters, but they were added
at some point in its history. The previous owners, beginning in the mid-2000’s brought the house
closer to its historic character, including removing the (we believe) aluminum siding and
returning to original wood siding painted in a more historic palette; they also removed and did
not replacing the gutters, instead relying on the large roof overhang to deal with the rain.
There have been several additions since the house was built, however, and when it rains much of
the water from the back of the house falls onto the roof of these first-floor additions, thus also
splashing the sides of the house. Over the last 16 years this has caused rotting of the wood siding
in certain areas of the second story in the rear, rotting of one of the original windows in the rear,
damage to masonry, as well as other issues that a lack of gutters can cause over the long term.
We have a quote from Klean Gutters Midwest to install 6” K-style gutters in our house and
garage. We considered installing round gutters, but we felt that the K-style actually fit the
character of the home better; most of our neighbors also have K-style gutters, rather than round,
installed. The color (Antique Ivory) will match the current color of the house.
Attached is a photo indicating the work the previous owners completed in 2007, including
removing the gutters. (Note that the downspouts of the new gutters will run down the corners of
the house; they will not be in the location of the “before” photo included.) If needed we can
supply photos of the areas of the house that have been damaged due to a lack of gutters as well.
Sincerely,
Tawrin Baker and Juanita Pinzon Caicedo
