MEMO
TO: Don Inks
Director, City of South Bend Economic Development
DATE: May 25, 2012
RE: Lifecycle Renewal Fund for Downtown Street Furniture
DD
DD
Street furniture, inclusive of benches, trash receptacles, flower pots, and bicycle racks, has been a welcome
and integral part of the downtown streetscaping. It provides a hospitable, functional and cohesive sense of
place throughout the district. Since its initial installation in 2008, Downtown South Bend, Inc. (DTSB) has
assumed responsibility for the on -going maintenance of these items — including, but not limited to minor
repairs of moving parts, painting, eliminating rust, cleaning/power washing, and removing graffiti /stickers.
Overall, these items have worn well. Nonetheless, there is a natural lifecycle to these items, some of which
is expedited through vandalism, theft, accidental damage, or other unavoidable circumstances.
DTSB would like to provide a more significant management and maintenance plan for the downtown street
furniture on an on -going basis. The administration and implementation of this plan would not involve any
additional costs; however, DTSB proposes reimbursement for expenses related to physical replacement parts
or units.
An ongoing inventory of these items by our Ambassador Team reveals the following current situation, which
has been coupled with recent quotes for total repair /replacement:
Item
Qty
Price
Total
Tivoli Trash Can Door*
7
$
385.00
$
2,695.00
Copenhagen Bench Slats*
28
$
68.95
$
1,930.60
Tivoli Trash Receptacle
2
$
1,395.00
$
2,790.00
Copenhagen Bench
1
$
1,995.00
$
1,995.00
Bicycle Rack (Single)
0
$
156.00
$
-
Flower Basket
0
$
105.00
$
-
Flower Bowl
2
$
1,895.00
$
3,790.00
Flower Pot
2
$
1,179.00
$
2,358.00
Total Cost
$
15,558.60
*Immediately Necessary
Perhaps we could consider a fixed annual lifecycle renewal fund for these items based on a percentage of
replacement cost, a straight line - reimbursement program, or some combination thereof.
I look forward to discussing this with you and your team at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your
commitment to a beautiful, safe, clean and inviting downtown!
Respectfully,
V.—
Aaron J.
