MEMO TO: Don Inks Director, City of South Bend Economic Development DATE: May 25, 2012 RE: Lifecycle Renewal Fund for Downtown Street Furniture DD DD Street furniture, inclusive of benches, trash receptacles, flower pots, and bicycle racks, has been a welcome and integral part of the downtown streetscaping. It provides a hospitable, functional and cohesive sense of place throughout the district. Since its initial installation in 2008, Downtown South Bend, Inc. (DTSB) has assumed responsibility for the on -going maintenance of these items — including, but not limited to minor repairs of moving parts, painting, eliminating rust, cleaning/power washing, and removing graffiti /stickers. Overall, these items have worn well. Nonetheless, there is a natural lifecycle to these items, some of which is expedited through vandalism, theft, accidental damage, or other unavoidable circumstances. DTSB would like to provide a more significant management and maintenance plan for the downtown street furniture on an on -going basis. The administration and implementation of this plan would not involve any additional costs; however, DTSB proposes reimbursement for expenses related to physical replacement parts or units.
