COMMITTEE REPORT: <br /> Community and Economic Development Committee <br /> TO THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND: <br /> The February 23, 1998 meeting of the Community and Economic <br /> Development Committee was called to order by its Vice-Chairman <br /> Council Member Rod Sniadecki at 3:32 p.m. in the Council informal <br /> meeting room. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council Members: Sniadecki, <br /> Pfeifer and Broden. <br /> TOTAL ENTERPRISES, LTD <br /> The CED staff report was given by Ms. Nancy VanScoyk. Mr. Phil <br /> Faccenda, Jr. made the presentation. Since 1996, the operation <br /> went from forty-seven (47) to sixty-eight (68) employees. No <br /> public comment. Council Member Broden made a motion that Bill <br /> No. 98-28 be recommended favorably to the Council. Council <br /> Member Pfeifer seconded the motion which carried. This bill was <br /> sent to the Council favorably with a vote of 3-0. <br /> MICHIANA INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY <br /> The CED staff report was given by Ms. Nancy VanScoyk. Mr. Steve <br /> Kubsch, President, spoke regarding this tax abatement. Mr. <br /> Kubsch stated that this is a $350,000 project and will result in <br /> the creation of three (3) new permanent jobs and will maintain <br /> the six (6) existing full time jobs and four (4) permanent part- <br /> time jobs. He also noted that Michiana Industrial Supply was <br /> started in 1982. There was no public comment. Council Member <br /> Broden inquired of the nature of the business, while Council <br /> Member Pfeifer asked if people of color were employed at Michiana <br /> Industrial. Council Member Broden made a motion that Bill No. <br /> 98-29 be sent to the full Council with a favorable <br /> recommendation. Council member Pfeifer seconded the motion which <br /> carried with a vote of 3-0. <br /> KOVAS DOOR COMPANY <br /> The CED staff report was given by Ms. Nancy VanScoyk. She stated <br /> that the Petitioner is proposing to use a 10,000 square foot <br /> building and the total cost of this project is $300,000. The <br /> project will add two (2) new jobs. Mr. Dan Kovas stated that the <br /> business was started in 1979 and has grown from two (2) employees <br /> to twelve ( 12) . Council Member Broden made a motion that this <br /> tax abatement be sent favorably to the full Council. Council <br /> Member Pfeifer seconded the motion which carried with a 3-0 vote. <br /> Council Member Pfeifer gave suggestions to Mr. Kovas on where to <br /> get directions on minority hiring. <br /> EXPANDED METAL COMPANY OF INDIANA LLC <br /> The CED report was given by Ms. Nancy VanScoyk. It was noted <br /> that this is a $845,000 project. Mr. Ted Lerman advised that <br /> their consultants felt that this location was better suited than <br />
