"' ~ y ,pa 1r..~...~ <br />~~ :'"'~ <br />.~~+~ ~ ~ X90. <br />Recreation/Culture/Library (Cont'd) <br />The St. Joseph River flows through the City and provides scenic and- boating <br />pleasure. The Olympic-class East Race Waterway runs adjacent to the St. Joseph <br />River and is a 2,000 yard man-made rafting and kayaking course. This waterway <br />is the only man-made white rapids in the United States. .In the summer, <br />national and regional competitions are held on the course. <br />Other attractions include the Morris Civic Auditorium which offers Broadway <br />plays and the South Bend Symphony, the Studebaker Museum which .houses a <br />collection of carriages, wagons, cars and trucks, the Potawatomi Zoo and the <br />Morris Conservatory. Century Center, located on the, riverfront park, has 54,000 <br />square feet of exhibit and convention space available as well as a recital hall, <br />performance area and theatre. <br />Activities are also available at the many colleges and universities in the City,. <br />especially St. Mary's College, Notre Dame University, Bethel College and Indiana <br />university at South Bend. <br />The St. Joseph County Library, as well as the Indiana University at South Bend <br />Library, and the Mishawaka-Penn Library provide a wide range of library services <br />to residents of the area. The St. Joseph County Library is currently <br />completing $8 million of renovations and additions to several branches. One <br />addition to the largest library branch is completed, as is a parking lot <br />addition at another location. The !0,000 square foot addition to the main <br />library is expected to be completed by Summer, 1°O1. <br />-b- <br />
