'se Om& <br /> The May 27, 1997 meeting of the Public Works and Property Vacation Committee was <br /> called to order at 4:05 p.m.in the Council informal meeting room by Dr.Varner. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council President Kelly, Council Members: Aranowski, <br /> Ujdak, Pfeifer, Broden, and Varner; Craig Hudson of Cole Associates, Eledean DeRose, <br /> Dea Andrews,and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand. <br /> Dr. Varner noted that the first item on the agendea was to review Bill No. 39-97 which is <br /> an alley vacation request. <br /> Dea Andrews of the South Bend Heritage Foundation made the presentation. She showed <br /> a site plan to the Committee. She noted that the alley vacation is necessary in order to build <br /> a building for phase one of the Chapin Market development. The building will house a <br /> Say-A-Lot and the Chapin Street Clinic. The building will provide local grocery and health <br /> services within a walking distance of the area as well as the surrounding neighborhood by <br /> vehicle or bus. <br /> Following discussion, Council Member Aranowski made a motion seconded by Council <br /> Member Ujdak that Bill No. 30-97 be recommended favorably to Council. The motion <br /> passed. <br /> The Committee then reviewed Bill No. 40-97 which is a request to vacate an alley and <br /> portions of two streets. <br /> Mr. Craig Hudson of Cole Associates made the presentation. He stated that the purpose of <br /> the proposed vacation is to minimize the amount of vehicular traffic within the South Bend <br /> campus of Indiana University to help facilitate the expansion of the existing pedestrian <br /> mall. He showed a site improvement plan to the Committee. <br /> Dr. Varner noted that this received a favorably recommendation from the Board of Public <br /> Works. <br /> Dea Andrews spoke in favor of the proposed vacation. <br /> Council Member Aranowski noted that Assistant Fire Chief Burt Prawat raised concerns <br /> with regards to access to the areas for both ambulance service and fire services. Mr. <br /> Hudson noted that access would be accommodated for both types of vehicles. <br /> Following further discussion, Council Member Broden made a motion seconded by <br /> Council Member Aranowski that substitute Bill No. 40-97 be recommended favorably to <br /> Council. The motion passed. <br /> There being no further business to come before the Committee,the meeting was adjourned <br /> at 4:17 p.m. <br />
