tommfttts Ztport:
Personnel and Finance and Health and Public Safety Joint Committee Meeting
go the Common tountfl of the City of foutb Otnb:
The December 8, 1997 meeting of the Personnel and Finance and Health and Public Safety
Joint Committees was called to order by Health and Public Safety Chairperson, Council
Member Charlotte Pfeifer at 5:05 p.m. in the Council informal meeting room.
Persons in attendance included Council Members: Aranowski, Pfeifer, Coleman, Ujdak,
Broden, Hosinski, Sniadecki and Varner; Chief Luther Taylor, Assistant Chief Rick
Switalski,Terry Bland, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand.
Chief Taylor then reviewed Substitute Bill No. 119-97 which would make technical
corrections to the Firefighter Salary Ordinance. He noted that the bill would add full time
instructors, firefighter recruits, and pays for team leaders for speciality response teams to
the Salary Ordinance.
In response to a question raised by Council Member Ujdak, it was noted that the city
spends approximately 10 weeks at 40 hours per week in training. It was also noted that a
proposal for recruits would provide better management for individuals who do not meet the
overall educational and testing requirements with passage of those requirements taking
place first and then being sworn in as a first class firefighter.
Following discussion, Council Member Broden made a motion, seconded by Council
Member Ujdak, that Substitute Bill No. 119-97 be recommended favorably to Council.
The motion passed.
Under miscellaneous business, Fire Chief Luther Taylor noted that the County-wide
Ambulance is basically on schedule. All three units will be operating by the second week
of January.
Also under unfinished business,it was recommended that the Police Department provide an
update on the small group initiatives.
Council Member Varner also raised the issue that when the Council does review city pool
policies, that it look at the Scottsdale pool, and an overall assessment of all public and
private pools at the January 1998 meeting.
There being no further business to come before the committee, the meeting was adjourned
at 5:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Council Member Charlotte Pfeifer
Chairperson,Health and Public Safety Committee
attachments
