Commfttss Zsport: <br /> Community and Economic Development Committee <br /> to Os Common £ouittfl of the tttlj of south Stub: <br /> The October 23, 1995 meeting of the Community and Economic Development <br /> Committee was called to order by its Chairperson, Council Member Roland Kelly at 3:55 <br /> P.M.in the Council informal meeting room. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council Members:Kelly,Zakrzewski,Washington, <br /> Puzzello, Luecke, Coleman, Duda, and Ladewski; Bill Eagan, Citizen Member, Bill <br /> Panzica, Mike Urbanski, Peter G. Trybulia, and Jack Alessandra, Mike Beitzinger, Don <br /> Porter,and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand. <br /> The Committee then reviewed Resolution No. 95-78 which is a tax abatement request for <br /> South Phillipa. Mr. Mike Beitzinger noted that this was continued from the last Common <br /> Council meeting and involves the property located at 2208 West Indiana Ave., 1616, 1802 <br /> and 1819 South Phillipa Street. It is for a residentially distressed five year real property tax <br /> abatement with the petitioner being Habitat for Humanity. It was noted that they have <br /> received no previous tax abatements and qualify for the tax abatement. <br /> Mr. Mike Urbanski, a Member of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, made <br /> the formal presentation. He noted that with these properties being designated that there <br /> would be 21 total Habitat for Humanity homes in St. Joseph County. Council Member <br /> Kelly and Council Member Zakrzewski spoke in favor of the proposed Resolution and <br /> noted how valuable such a program is to our community. <br /> Following discussion, Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion, seconded by Council <br /> Member Puzzello that Resolution No. 95-78 be recommended favorably to Council. The <br /> motion passed. <br /> The Committee then reviewed Resolution No.95-82 which is a five year personal property <br /> tax abatement request for Interplastic Corporation for the property located at 1545 South <br /> Olive Street and also Resolution No.95-83 which is a ten year real property tax abatement <br /> for Interplastic Corporation located at the same address. <br /> Mike Beitzinger reviewed the memorandum from the Community and Economic <br /> Development Department dated October 13, 1995 which concluded that the petitioner meets <br /> the qualifications for both the ten year real property tax abatement and the five year personal <br /> tax abatement(copy attached). <br /> Mr. Jack L. Alessandra the President of the company made the formal presentation. He <br /> noted that the corporation has been located in South Bend for the past 18 years.This is a 3 <br /> million dollar project which would create 23 new jobs. The company exports to the Far- <br /> East,Canada, and throughout the United States. <br /> Following favorable comments from the Committee, Council Member Zakrzewski made a <br /> motion, seconded by Council Member Puzzello that Resolution Nos. 95-82 and 95-83 be <br /> recommended favorably to Council.
