JO\JES <br />A SPECIAL RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON ti ei[RK. sr"J~f' BEND, IN <br />OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA HONORING JACKIE BATTEAST FOR HER CONTRIBUTIONS <br />TO SOUTH BEND'S LEGACY OF PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYERS BY BEING THE FIRST CITY <br />NATIVE DRAFTED BY THE WNBA <br />~ Jacqueline (Jackie) Batteast was born in South Bend, Indiana on March 16, 1982; and <br />~ Jackie attended Washington High School where she was the second Lady Panther to score 500 <br />points in a single season in 2001 and finished her high school career with 1,635 points; and <br />~ Jackie's basketball career continued at the University of Notre Dame where, before graduating in <br />2005 , she started a school record 97 consecutive games and scored 1,874 career points; and <br />~ among the many highlights of Jackie's incredible collegiate career was an NCAA tournament <br />game on March 23 , 2004, against Middle Tennessee State, where she scored 27 points in 28 minutes, making 13 <br />of 17 shots, combined with 12 rebounds , to put the Irish in the Sweet 16; and <br />~ Jackie was named a finalist for the prestigious Naismith award, honoring the most outstanding <br />women's basketball player, in 2004 ; and <br />~ on April 16 , 2005, Jackie was selected in the second round of the Women's National Basketball <br />Association by the Minnesota Lynx, the first South Bend native drafted by a WNBA team ; and <br />~ Jackie was a part of the 2006 WNBA championship team as a member of Detroit Shock; and <br />~ after Jackie 's professional playing days were over, she returned to her hometown, spent time as <br />an assistant coach for the Washington High School Lady Panthers and continues to contribute to the South Bend <br />community to this day; and <br />~ the South Bend Common Council thanks Jackie for her contributions to South Bend's legacy of <br />professional basketball players. <br />Section I. The South Bend Common Council honors Jackie Batteast for her many contributions to girl's <br />and women's basketball during her time at Washington High School , the University of Notre Dame, and in the <br />WNBA.
