Emergency Repair Scope of Work
Selge Construction was contracted to excavate and assist the City of South Bend Engineering
with assessment of the damage.
Collapse Location 2 was excavated to accommodate repair. Upon review of the location of the
42-inch outfall pipe and 48-inch outfall pipe, City Engineering determined that the 48-inch brick
sewer could not be repaired without removing a section of the 42-inch outfall pipe due to worker
safety and potential for collapse. The pipes were repaired with available materials.
During work a segment of water main collapsed and had to be repaired during the work.
Collapse Location 1 was excavated to accommodate repair. Upon review of the location of the
42-inch outfall pipe and 48-inch outfall pipe, City Engineering determined that the 48-inch brick
sewer could not be repaired without removing a section of the 42-inch outfall pipe due to worker
safety and potential for collapse. The pipes were repaired after extensive cleaning as it took
almost ten days to extract the sand and soil out of the pipe via vacuum assisted trucks and high-
pressure water jetting. In addition, a section of the brick manhole structure had to be removed
and rebuilt due to the condition of the structure.
Pavement and curbing removed during construction were restored to original (or better)
conditions upon completion of the repairs.
For questions regarding the subject agenda request and emergency repair, contact Jacob M.
Klosinski (Ext. 9496) at the Division of Engineering.
September 27, 2022
