MONROE PARK NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601

Dear Adam Toering, Monday, May 3, 2021
Historic Preservation Commission
227 W Jefferson Blvd. #1400S
South Bend, Indiana 46601

We, the undersigned, as officers and board members of the Monroe Park Neighborhood Association, are
submitting this letter on behalf of our neighbors and friends, the Peter Claver Catholic Worker
community. They asked us to craft this letter of support for them and the improvements they intend to
make on their property at 518 S. St. Joseph St. This is a home for the women who all are part of the St.
Peter Claver Catholic Worker community. The women want to construct a pavilion over their backyard
patio. This property lies within the parameters of the Taylor’s Field historic district and they might need
our support in constructing this pavilion.

It is a necessary addition because of the heat/sun, rain, and snow. This space is utilized often by the
women and the community. Adding this pavilion increases the opportunity to more comfortably utilize
this space even more. And, given the credibility of the Catholic Workers and their appreciation for all
things beautiful, it is more than a guarantee that the pavilion construction will be done with the greatest
amount of care and thought respecting both the historicity of this home and neighborhood and the
architectural appropriateness for such a space. The pavilion will be simultaneously
functional/comfortable and historically/architecturally appropriate and beautiful. It will also be durable
so the women, community members, and neighbors will be able to enjoy this pavilion for decades to
come. For the more civically concerned, this pavilion may also add to the taxable value to this home.

Please allow the Catholic Workers and the women of this home the opportunity to build their pavilion. It
will benefit us all in Monroe Park and the city of South Bend.

Mike Coman, President Stacey Odom, Vice President
Monroe Park Neighborhood Association Monroe Park Neighborhood Association

Rick Tribble, Treasurer Gil Michel, Board Member
Monroe Park Neighborhood Association Monroe Park Neighborhood Association

Frank Ermeti, Board Member Bill Erdman, Board Member
Monroe Park Neighborhood Association Monroe Park Neighborhood Association

Eduardo Forero, Board Member Jason Isch, Board Member
Monroe Park Neighborhood Association Monroe Park Neighborhood Association
