C E I (— (v--qv,
tommittu Ztport
Community and Economic Development Committee
1E0 zbt tOmmon Council of tlje City of giout1j *n :
The November 14, 1994 meeting of the Community and Economic Development
Committee was called to order by its Chairperson, Council Member Roland Kelly at 4:30
P.M.in the Council informal meeting room.
Persons in attendance included Council Members Luecke, Kelly, Puzzello,
Slavinskas, Zakrzewski, Coleman, Duda, and Ladewski; John Oxian, Mike Beitzinger,
Marc R.Peterson, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand.
Council Member Kelly noted that the first item to be reviewed was Resolution No.
94-105 which is a Personnel Property Tax Abatement request for Peterson Printing
Corporation doing business as Peterson Graphs Group.
Mr. Mike Beitzinger reviewed the Community and Economic Development report
dated November 9, 1994. He noted that the project calls for an installation of
$3,000,000.00 worth of desktop publishing, imagesetting and print production equipment.
It qualifies for a 5 year Personal Property Tax Abatement (copy attached). In response to a
question raised by Council Member Luecke,Mr. Peterson, the President of the corporation
noted that the electronic equipment would have a 3 to 5 year life expectancy and is in
addition to current equipment; that the printing press would have a 10 year life and replaces
current printing presses; and that the cutters and folders would have a 15 year life and
replace some and are in addition to others.
Council Member Slavinskas noted that from 1989 to the present that there has been
a decrease in employment. Mr. Peterson noted that last year the Corporation marked its
75th year of operation. He noted that it began in 1918 and employment has gone from 127
to 97.He noted however that between 15 to 20 part-time people are used through corporate
staffing. He highlighted that the company has been working with the Union and that
beginning rates will be at approximately$7.00 with a contract having open in March of this
year. He also noted that the number of employees projected is a conservative projection.
In response to a question raised by Council Member Ladewski it was noted that
business for the printing company is approximately 80% local and from Southern
Michigan,Indianapolis, and some from Miles.
Following further discussion, Council Member Slavinskas made a motion,
seconded by Council Member Luecke that Resolution No. 94-105 be recommended
favorably to Council.The motion passed.
There being no further business to come before the Committee the meeting was
adjourned at 4:42 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Council Member Roland Kelly, Chairperson
Community and Economic Development Committee ,
Attachments
