ouni <br /> 111 <br /> v � <br /> x r�" <br /> SPECIAL PROCLAMATION NO. 09-2022 <br /> A SPECIAL PROCLAMATION WELCOMING THE NATIONAL BLACK SISTERS' <br /> CONFERENCE,JULY 23-26, 2022 <br /> 'Whereas, the National Black Sisters' Conference (NBSC) was established in <br /> 1968 to educate, support, and communicate to African American women religious; <br /> and <br /> Whereas, while confronting racism in society and the Catholic Church, NBSC's <br /> mission has been to foster: <br /> • Education and support of African American sisters toward effective ministry <br /> • Education toward community control of African American communities <br /> • Training in community organization and development <br /> • Development of religious education from an African American perspective <br /> • Development of African American spirituality <br /> • Identification of African American sisters throughout the United States; and <br /> 'Whereas, the NBSC is active in seeking social justice for all; and <br /> " Whereas, the NBSC, along with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, <br /> published a statement entitled "The Sacred Right to Vote" on January 17, 2022, in <br /> support of voting rights legislation; and <br /> 'Whereas, the NBSC, along with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious <br /> and the NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, issued a statement entitled <br /> "Celebrating a Black Woman Supreme Court Justice- A Justice for Our Times" on <br /> February 23, 2022; and <br /> 'Whereas, on April 22, 2022, the NBSC received the inaugural Distinguished <br /> Justice-Seeker Award from NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice; and <br /> Whereas, the annual meeting of NBSC is being held at the University of Notre <br /> Dame from July 23, 2022, through July 26, 2022. <br /> Now, therefore, be it proclaimed; by the Common Council of the City of <br /> South Bend; Indiana, as follows: <br /> Section I. The National Black Sisters' Conference is a shining example of <br /> social justice activism. <br /> Section II. Such activism is needed in the current unsettled times. <br /> Section III. We welcome the NBSC to South Bend for their annual meeting and <br /> hope their time here is rewarding and fulfilling. <br />
