Committee Report <br /> PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE <br /> To the Common Council of the City Of South Bend: <br /> The March 22, 1993 meeting of the Public Safety Committee <br /> was called to order by its' Chairperson, Council Member <br /> Eugene Ladewski, at 4 : 30 p.m. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council Members Luecke, <br /> Washington, Kelly, Puzzello, Slavinskas, Zakrzewski, <br /> Coleman, Duda, Ladewski; Assistant Chief Bert Prawat, <br /> Assistant Chief Rick Switalski, Don Porter and Kathleen <br /> Cekanski-Farrand. <br /> Council Member Ladewski noted that the first item on the <br /> agenda was to review Bill No. 15-93 which would appropriate <br /> $16, 360. 00 from the Hazardous Materials Fund. Assistant <br /> Chief Switalski then p assed out <br /> (copies attached) pictures <br /> of the four (4) types of hazardous suits which would be <br /> purchased from this appropriation. This would provide two <br /> (2) additional suits for backups in case of damage. The <br /> suits cost $4,400. 00 each and are made in Sweden. The <br /> appropriation would also allow the purchase of air bottles <br /> with a maximum of one (1) hour of air each and would allow <br /> an operating budget of $2 , 500. 00 to be established in order <br /> to track hazmat expenses. It was noted that thirty-six (36) <br /> firefighters are assigned to the Hazmat Team allowing twelve <br /> (12) per shift. The Toll Road Contract calls for eight (8) <br /> which must respond. <br /> Following further discussion Council Member Kelly made a <br /> motion, seconded by Council Member Washington that Bill No. <br /> 15-93 be recommended favorably to Council . The motion <br /> passed. <br /> The Committee then reviewed Substitute Bill No. 16-93 which <br /> would appropriate $128, 300. 00 from the EMS Capital <br /> Improvement Fund. <br /> Assistant Chief Switalski stated that the Substitute Bill <br /> would allow the purchase of a mid-size vehicle at the cost <br /> of $13 , 300. 00 and the refurbishing of Engine 2 at a cost of <br /> $75, 000. 00. He noted that a full size new pumper would cost <br /> the City $231, 000. 00 and therefore the refurbishing cost <br /> would be money well spent. The refurbished Engine 2 should <br /> be ready by September of this year and then put into full <br /> service. The radio equipment at ' $15, 000. 00 would allow <br /> fifteen (15) new radios to be purchased and $25, 000. 00 would <br />
