Guidebook Chapin Park Local Historic District <br />Page 36 <br />508 Lindsey Avenue American Foursquare <br />This house was built in 1903 for Guy L. Bunker, the South Bend <br />Chief of Police, and Mrs. Minnie Bunker. Rose Bennett, Minnie’s <br />daughter from another marriage, also resided here. Rose Bennett <br />Young inherited the house by 1949. <br />510 Lindsey Avenue American Foursquare <br />Built in 1903, Clifford and Esther Snell were the first residents of <br />this house. Clifford was a bookkeeper for an oil company. The <br />Snells raised one daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1903), and resided here <br />until 1932. <br />512 Lindsey Avenue American Foursquare <br />This house was also built in 1903. Dr. Louis J. Smith, a dentist, is list- <br />ed as the principal resident in 1904. He lived at this address with his <br />stepdaughter, Ruth Hunt (b. 1887), and daughter, Jane Smith (b. <br />1894) until 1914. Frank McErlain, an architect, lived here from 1916 <br />until 1945 with his wife, Carrol, and daughter, Linda, a nurse. <br />309 Madison Street (W)Shingle Style <br />Records date this house to 1877. Christian Louis and Magdalena <br />Benz were the first owners and residents. Christian owned a <br />wholesale and retail liquor store on Washington Street and passed <br />away in 1895. They raised two sons: Eugene and G. Frederick, an <br />Inspector for the City, who acquired the property soon after his <br />father’s death. The house is also listed as 313 Madison. <br />317 Madison Street (W)Gable Front <br />Records date this house to 1886. It has been an income property for <br />many years. In 1899, Ottis J. Faurote, a saloonkeeper, and his wife, <br />Kate, rented the house. Other residents include: William Hindman <br />and Charles and Lena Freech. <br />319 Madison Street (W)Gable Front <br />A twin to 317 Madison Street, this house was also an income prop- <br />erty for many years, but had longer-term residents. Mrs. Esther <br />Freudenstein, widow of Sigmund, lived here from 1891 until 1910. <br />Her two children, Milton, a clothing salesman at Alder’s, and <br />Lillian, also lived at this address. (See 327 W. Madison) Subsequent <br />residents include: Mrs. Theresa Vahlert and Harriet Vaughn.
