Cffice <br /> BILL NO. 22-32 JUN 2 2 209 <br /> I <br /> RESOLUTION NO. ��Zvv n;M 3n.��5 <br /> ERK, SCE;'_ SEND, IN <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, URGING THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND <br /> AND THE SOUTH BEND COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION TO ENTER INTO <br /> NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE USE OF UNDERUTILIZED SCHOOL CORPORATION <br /> BUILDINGS BY SOUTH BEND RESIDENTS <br /> WHEREAS, for the past several months the local media has carried stories about <br /> underutilized school buildings and the possibility of closing some schools; and <br /> WHEREAS, the schools at issue were built with taxpayer money and, in many cases, <br /> remain functional despite being underutilized; and <br /> WHEREAS, these buildings were built to benefit South Bend residents in general and, <br /> more particularly,residents of nearby neighborhoods; and <br /> WHEREAS, use of these buildings for community and/or neighborhood activities such as <br /> community meetings, classes, and athletic activities would be a great benefit to those seeking <br /> appropriate facilities; and <br /> WHEREAS, such uses of these buildings would also reduce crime in surrounding <br /> neighborhoods by providing a place for residents to gather other than on the streets. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IS RESOLVED, by the Common Council of the City of South <br /> Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br /> Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana hereby urges the City <br /> of South Bend and the South Bend Community School Corporation to enter into negotiations for <br /> the use of underutilized school corporation buildings by South Bend residents. <br /> Section II. An agreement for such use is in the best interests of South Bend residents by <br /> providing facilities for community meetings, classes, and athletic activities. <br /> Section III.
