trrttnttttz r Lying
o the Comm Olounril of the Ong of 0ou14 rnb:
PARKS COMMITTEE
The Parks Committee convened at 4 p.m. , Tuesday, May 19, 1992, at the East
Race Headquarters on Niles Avenue. In attendance were committee members
Sean Coleman, Roland Kelly, Ann Puzzello and Steve Luecke. Also in
attendance were Karl Stevens, South Bend Park Superintendent; John
Berkebile, St. Joseph County Park Superintendent; Neil Ledet, Fish &
Wildlife Officer for the Indiana DNR; and Don Porter, South Bend Tribune.
The purpose of this meeting was to receive an update on the St. Joseph
River Fish Ladder system and Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout fisheries
program for the St. Joseph River.
Mr. Ledet announced that the tentative date for the dedication of the fish
ladder system was either October 9 or 10th of this year. He also reported
that the Niles ladder at the French Papermill site was completed as of
last September. There were some problems at the Buchanan fish ladder but
they were being addressed. The number of Chinook salmon being fed into
the St. Joseph River at the Mishawaka hatchery site is 165,000 and the
number of Steelhead is 175,000. The return cycle from Lake Michigan is
from 2 to 4 years. Mr. Ledet also mentioned that this year there would be
a fish count to track the number of fish returning past the East Race fish
ladder site. Funding at the State level for this program has remained
constant over the past several years. The main thrust of the salmon fish
run would occur in September and October of this year. He also noted the
St. Joseph River continues to be a prime spot for small mouth bass,
catfish and carp fishing. Mr. Ledet answered questions from committee
members and the meeting ended with a visit to the fish ladder viewing
chamber at the East Race at. 5:00 p.m.
Sean Coleman
Chairman
•
aVT .46:0.
