There are 76 burial
sites of which 61 have markers. It is the second cemetery
which the Historic Preservation Commission is requesting
historical designation. He, and Mr. Fred Holycross, the new
director of the Historic Preservation Commission, noted that
the cemetery contains many children and adolescents who died
as a result of typhoid fever. There are Spanish-American
war veterans buried there, as well as Joseph Rohrer, who was
one of the first County Commissioners of St. Joseph County,
and Mr. David Rohrer Leeper, who was Mayor of the city of
South Bend from 1893 -1894. It was noted that the Centre
Township Trustee is currently maintaining the cemetery. Mr.
Oxian noted that standards, if such a designation would be
granted, would be developed at a later date. He also noted
that the Commission is looking at abandoned cemeteries which
were established prior to the 1900's, initially for possible
historic designation status.
Council Member Slavinskas noted that the Centre Township
Trustee is supportive of the concept.
Following discussion, Council President Niezgodski made a
motion seconded by Council Member Luecke that Bill No. 63-91
be recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed.
