US FOUNDRY
PAINTING & NO PAINT POLICY I
U.S. Foundry gray iron castings are provided unpainted as
a standard. The painting of construction castings only serves
to enhance the initial cosmetic appearance, sometimes even
hiding defects, and does not add appreciable protection to
the long-term performance of the product.
By nature, grey iron castings are highly resistant to
corrosion caused by most environmental elements, without
the need for additional treatment. AASHTO specifications for
construction castings specifically call for unpainted castings.
This policy is for cast iron products only, and will not affect
other products such as steel grating or steel access doors. In
addition, U.S. Foundry does have the ability to paint castings
for specific applications, upon request.
BUY AMERICAN PROVISIONS
By law, American-made iron and steel foundry products
must be used in all federal transportation projects and state
and local government projects that use federal transportation
dollars. Products covered by the law include manhole frames
and covers, catch basin frames and grates, iron and steel inlet
grating, and various miscellaneous iron products.
The Buy American provision of the law, known as the
Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991,
explicitly requires that iron castings manufactured in U.S.
foundries be used for federal transportation infrastructure
projects. Such a provision first appeared in the Surface
Transportation Assistance Act of 1982. Then, however, the
law required that only U.S.-made "steel and manufactured
products" could be used in transportation projects funded by
the federal government.
With the passage of the 1991 legislation, Congress clarified
the 1982 legislation by specifically stating that iron products
are covered by the Buy American provision. The Department
of Transportation Buy American provision now reads
U.S.-made "steel, iron and manufactured products"
CHOOSING AN APPLICATION
All data in this catalog is presented to assist the users in
their selection of products for their particular application. U.S.
Foundry does not recommend or specify any product for
particular uses or applications. The choice of a product for a
specific use such as bicycle, pedestrian, wheelchair, etc. is
solely at the discretion of the specifier.
1-800-432-9709
SUSTAINABILITY STATEMENT
U.S. Foundry is dedicated to maintaining an eco -friendly
manufacturing facility and embraces the concepts of
sustainability. The steel and iron used in our casting are 100%
recycled material. Furthermore, our foundry is licensed by the
State of Florida as recycler for special waste, enabling us to
safely process material that would otherwise be sent to a
landfill.
We are proactive in our approach to sustainability. Not only
are we using recycled material to make our products, we are
reusing four major waste streams that are created by our
manufacturing process. When our foundry sand is no longer
fit for making castings, it is delivered to outside industries for
beneficial reuse. We reuse our blow down water from our
cooling towers to lower the temperature of our cupola
exhaust. This eliminates the need for more water and the
need to dispose of the blow down water in a sewer. We sell
our waste oil to companies that refine it back into motor oil.
Finally the slag we create in the melting process is reused by
the cement industry as a raw material. The successful and
beneficial reuse of these four streams has allowed US
Foundry to reduce its manufacturing waste streams by over
90%.
We gladly support the LEED programs by furnishing
documentation required for a LEED certification. US Foundry
uses 100% ferrous scrap to make its product, therefore the
recycled content is 100%. The post -consumer recycled
content is 95%, while the preconsumer recycled content is
5%. We manufacture all of our municipal casting in Miami,
Florida.
We are proud of our clean plant, and we work hard to keep
our commitments, to our employees, our community, our
customers, and to the environment.
CROSS REFERENCE CHARTS
We have included cross-reference charts on State
Department of Transportation standard items for a large
number of states. These are shown on pages CR -1 thru CR -7.
For more information on these or any other standards, please
contact your sales or customer service representative.
GENERAL INFORMATION 5
