Russell Stapp, Architect <br />Property Owner: VENARD DANIEL J & GALLERANO CLAIRE HW <br />Landmark or District Designation: East Wayne Street Local Historic District, <br />#7796-87 <br />Rating: Contributing <br /> <br /> <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The home is a two storey brick faced frame structure set on a <br />rectangular plan with a gable roof, plain raking board covered with synthetic slate shingles. The windows are <br />casements, paired with wood casings and original storms. There are eyebrow wall dormers at the second floor <br />in the front and rear of the house. There are brick chimneys at either end of the main portion of the house. The <br />Entry has a steep gable roof; plain rake board articulated at the eaves ends with exposed rafter tails, simple <br />entablature detail and iron balcony railing above entry door. There is a south side shed roof wing with paired <br />double hung arched windows flanked by attenuated double hung brick header course sills. There is an east <br />side one storey flat roof wing with second floor access door to roof; the rear porch below has a plain round <br />wood support column. The house is situated on a corner lot of Wayne and Twyckenham. <br /> <br />ALTERATIONS: COA 1992-0217 allowed for the replacement of the garage door, replacement of aluminum <br />storm door with wood, porch ceiling reconstruction, repair of wood latticework. COA 1997-0728 allowed for <br />encasing a rear door in the pantry, covering with a lattice. COA 1999-00721 allowed for landscaping and site <br />work, including large brick patio, chain link fence, hedgerows, driveway reconfiguration, and the construction of a <br />shed at the northeast corner of the property. COA 2004-0102-3 allowed for the replacement of the slate roof with <br />synthetic slate and installation of copper gutters. COA 2007-0622 allowed for the removal of a dead hemlock, <br />replacement with suitable tree. COA 2009-0731B allowed for the reconstruction of the brick columns, installation <br />of a wrought iron gate, the removal of a wrought iron gate and the installation of lanterns; replacement of balcony. <br /> <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: “Addition of dormer to accommodate a finished third floor at the current unfinished <br />attic. All new windows at the dormer will be traditional Andersen E-Series Wood Casement and French Casements <br />to match the existing windows at the house. The Dormer will be clad in synthetic slate shingles to match the <br />existing synthetic slate roof shingles and the new dormer roof will be a standing seam roof, (due to the pitch of the <br />roof).” <br /> <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The applicant has requested approval to: <br /> <br />Build an approximately 30’ long dormer on the east elevation of the existing synthetic slate roof of the third <br />floor / attic area of this Tudor Revival style house. <br /> <br />Materials proposed include matching synthetic slate cladding, cedar trim, copper gutters, Andersen E-series Wood <br />Casement windows. <br /> <br />Due to the low-pitch of the proposed shed dormer, a standing-seam metal roof is proposed for installation. <br /> <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: EAST WAYNE STREET <br />III. NEW CONSTRUCTION <br />New construction includes any new building or structure constructed within the boundaries of the historic district, or any new <br />addition to an existing building.
