Puzzello, Slavinskas, Zakrzewki ,
Coleman, Duda, and Voorde; Max Moore, and Kathleen
Cekanski-Farrand.
Council Member Voorde noted that the members of the Rules
Committee were Council Members Coleman, Slavinskas, and
Voorde.
Council Member Ann Puzzello then reviewed Bill No. 90-88
which would change the terminology incorporated within
Chapter 2 of the Municipal Code of the City of South Bend.
She stated that the Bill would delete 'references to
"Councilmen, Councilman, and Chairman" and would substitute
instead Council Members and Chair Person and would also
incorporate his of• her references throughout the Chapter.
She stated that there have been seven women that have served
. on the City Council in recent years and that the current
terminology seems incorrect. She further stated that she
had received letters of support for the Bill from such
•
organizations as "LEW" and "AAUP".
Max Moore voiced favorable comments with regard to the Bill.
Council . Member Luecke stated that there were additional
references which required amendments to the Bill and he
stated that he had asked the Council Attorney to prepare a
new substitute bill for this evening's meeting. (copy
attached)
Council Member Niezgodski voiced favorable support of the
Bill. -
Council Member Coleman stated that this was not just a
"women's issue" . He believed that it was needed not only
for clarification purposes but that it has a specific place
of importance in the legislative process.
Following further discussion by the Committee, Council
Member Coleman made a motion seconded by Council Member
Voorde that the amended version of Bill No. 90-88 be
recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed by a 2
to 1 vote with Council Member Slavinskas in the minority.
