South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—January 10. 2013
6. NEW BUSINESS
D. Airport Economic Development Area
(3) continued...
once the weather breaks in the spring. The current payment period from October 22 to
December I generated a claim in the total of$1,884. The rate for the barricades was based
on a daily charge. Because the rental period will be more protracted than first expected, in
coordination with staff at State Barricade, I have asked for a proposal to maintain the
barricade system until June 1, 2013. The projected amount for this service period is S4,180.
Staff requests approval of a not-to-exceed amount of$4,500 to cover the projected amount
and all outstanding claims.
Mr. Varner asked whether State Barricading Inc. also maintains the barricades once they are
in place. Mr. Schalliol responded that they check them approximately three times a week
and, if there are any issues, they will repair or replace them.
Upon a motion by Mr. Alford, seconded by Mr. Downes and unanimously carried, the
Commission approved the proposal from State Barricading for the scope of services
proposed in an amount not to exceed $4,500.
E. West Washington-Chapin Development Area
F. South Side Development Area
G. Northeast Neighborhood Development Area
H. Douglas Road Economic Development Area
I. Other
(1) Request for allocation of Airport TIF funds for Code for America
Mr. Ford noted that South Bend has been selected as one of nine partner cities for Code for
America for 2013. This is a prestigious award that will allow South Bend to work towards
creating technological solutions to civic issues. Our main focus is to promote economic
development in South Bend.
The topics to be addressed for South Bend are ease of doing business in South Bend,
simplifying business licensing and permitting processes, vacant and abandoned housing, and
improving citizen involvement, engagement and outreach.
Goals:
• Develop web based applications that address civic issues
• Foster sustainable impacts in government
7
