CITY CLERK,SOUTH BEND, IN <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, COMMEMORATING MARCH 2O22 AS <br /> WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH <br /> WHEREAS, the first International Women's Day was a global celebration of the <br /> economic, political and social achievements of women was celebrated on March 8, 1911; and <br /> WHEREAS,the United Nations has sponsored International Women's Day since 1975 <br /> when it adopted a resolution"To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and <br /> the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, <br /> equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the <br /> strengthening of international peace and security"; and <br /> WHEREAS, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring <br /> March 8 as National Women's History Week in 1980; and <br /> WHEREAS,the United States Congress expanded the week to the entire month of <br /> March in 1987; and <br /> WHEREAS,the United States and several other countries around the world recently <br /> celebrated International Women's Day or March 8; and <br /> WHEREAS,the theme for 2022, as designated by the National Women's History <br /> Alliance, is "Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope", which is "both a tribute to the <br /> ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a <br /> recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and <br /> hope throughout history; and <br /> WHEREAS, current events establish, more than ever, the need for women to continue to <br /> provide healing and promote hope. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IS RESOLVED,by the Common Council of the City of South <br /> Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br /> Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana recognizes and <br /> appreciates the countless contributions women make in all areas of life, not only during the <br /> month of March,but also during each and every day. <br /> Section II. The Common Council also recognizes and appreciates the five women <br /> members of this Council for their contributions to the well-being and progress of the City. <br /> Section III.This resolution shall become effective upon the date of passage. <br />
