City of South Bend: PE/RW Services for Bendix Drive 10
PROJECT APPROACH

MAINTENANCE OF TRAFFIC
Maintenance of traffic (MOT) is necessary to effectfvely and safely manage both pedestrian and industrial traffic through the Bendix corridor
during constructfon. We evaluated two MOT optfons but eliminated the optfon of maintaining one lane of traffic in each direc tfon due to:

» Constructability & Cost
» Unable to feasibly and safely construct within the existfng footprint; requires
a minimum of 3 MOT phases and creates limited room between temporary
traffic barriers and access to/from constructfon staging areas
» Requires temporary pavement and temporary traffic barrier

Our initial considerations assessed two options: maintaining
two-way traffic or utilizing one-way traffic. Upon evaluation,
we recommend one lane in a single direction.

One Lane in Single Direction with Detour for Opposite
Direction

Maintaining access is a critical consideration and requires personal, transparent contact with
businesses along the corridor.
Challenges: Access to Duramold & H.B. Fuller
» Access only from Bendix Drive

» May only enter & exit from one directfon

» Limits access to above & surrounding businesses that
may significantly impact shipping and receiving
business logistfcs and coordinatfon—i.e. Kuert

» Inconvenience in general circulatfon for emergency
responders, public transportatfon, and school buses
Advantage:
» Solvable challenges/problems already encountered
during the previous contract north of Lathrop Street

Discussing the City’s previous experience with this plan
offers us the foresight to antfcipate potentfal challenges
and address concerns in the plans and contract docu-
ments before constructfon begins.
Phase II
Phase I
CONSTRUCTABILITY REVIEWS
Our managers and engineers diligently scrutfnize our initfal designs and their consequentfal conceptualizatfons to ensure tha t any
discrepancies are addressed, specificatfons are accurate, and the most accurate specificatfons are acquired. This collaboratf on extends
beyond the team members for this proposal with the “down the hall” accessibility to Dale Wills and Dave Barich, PE, two household names to
the City of South Bend, who will help identffy areas of savings on schedule and on budget.

BIDDING, PRE-CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE, & CONSTRUCTION PHASE SERVICES
We believe whole-heartedly our services are not complete untfl the project is built. Upon completfon of the plans and ROW certffi catfon, our
team will answer questfons during the bidding process. We will attend the pre -constructfon conference and, if unforeseen issues arise during
constructfon, we will stand with the City to help address any issue and find the appropriate solutfons.
Duramold & H.B. Fuller
Only access is Bendix Drive
