McBride <br />Contact: Bob Palmer, Council Attorney: bpalmer@southbendin.gov <br /> <br />Prevent Gun Violence Statement <br />As President of the South Bend Common Council, and 3rd District <br />Representative, it is imperative that I speak out regarding the increased gun <br />violence in our community. It must stop! For it to stop, we must all come <br />together and work collaboratively. This is not a neighborhood issue, but a <br />city-wide issue. <br />In the past three years there have been 53 fatal criminally assaulted shooting <br />victims in South Bend. That is just the tip of the iceberg. In the same three <br />years, there have been 363 non-fatal criminally assaulted shooting victims. <br />Even this number does not tell the whole story. It does not include accidental <br />shootings such as the one on Diamond Avenue last week. <br /> Regardless of the cause, the result is the same. People die or are seriously <br />injured. Families are torn apart. People go to prison or are forever impacted <br />by grief and trauma. Gun violence have touched each one of us in some form <br />or fashion. <br /> If you see something, say something! Use Crimestoppers if you are more <br />comfortable doing so. <br /> Everyone needs to play a proactive role. It’s too late after a shooting <br />occurs.
